A Natural Remedy for Lingering Coughs: How GOOT Became My Go-To
The past couple of years have been tough in my household when it comes to sickness. It always seems to start with one child getting a mild cough for a week or two. Then, like clockwork, the fever, muscle aches, sore throat, and sometimes vomiting hit. While all those symptoms resolve with my natural remedies, the cough always lingers.
If you’re a parent, you know the struggle—kids don’t always have the patience for multiple tinctures and capsules throughout the day. Eventually, they decide the annoying cough is better than what I’m offering!
But this year, I discovered a simple and effective remedy called GOOT (Garlic, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil Treatment), and I’m thrilled with the results. The best part? You can apply it while your kids are sleeping!
Why I Love GOOT
I’ve now used GOOT twice on my kids, and the results have been very promising. It works gently but effectively to ease a lingering cough. Here’s the trick:
- Wait until they’re in a deep sleep. I usually wait about 30 minutes to an hour after bedtime—when they’re sound asleep and less likely to wake up.
- Easy nighttime application. I rub the GOOT on their chest or the bottoms of their feet. I cover their feet with socks to protect the sheets and sometimes place a paper towel or cloth over their chest for peace of mind.
With three kids dealing with persistent coughs right now (and the holidays just around the corner), I applied GOOT for two nights in a row. The results? By the next morning, all three kids had noticeably better coughs!
My 6-year-old, who’s had the most stubborn cough, saw more improvement with this remedy than with anything else we’ve tried. I think a couple more nights will clear it up completely!
How to Make GOOT
GOOT is quick and easy to make, using simple ingredients you probably already have on hand:
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Optional: a few drops of immune-boosting essential oil (like thyme, oregano, or Thieves)
Instructions:
- Blend the garlic, melted coconut oil, and olive oil in a high-powered blender or coffee grinder until smooth.
- Strain the mixture into a clean jar.
- Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil (optional) for extra immune support.
- Label jar with GOOT and expiration date – 2 weeks from the day you made it on.
- Place the jar in the fridge to solidify.
How to Use GOOT
- Take the jar out of the fridge and scoop a small amount onto your fingers.
- Rub your hands together to warm it slightly, then apply it to:
- The bottoms of the feet (cover with socks afterward).
- The chest or even the back.
- Use it at night while your kids are asleep, or during the day if they’re willing to let you apply it (mine weren’t!).
- Place on cotton swab and put in ear for ear infection
- Rub in nose for sinus infection
- Athlete’s Foot or jock itch
Why It Works
Garlic is a powerhouse natural remedy with antiviral, antimicrobial, and immune-boosting properties. Combined with coconut oil and olive oil, it absorbs easily into the skin to help soothe coughs and support healing. The oil from the garlic is absorb through the skin into the bloodstream and travels throughout the body. With direct application it kills candida, parasites, bad bacteria and viruses.
Final Thoughts
GOOT has become a staple in my home, and I’ll be reaching for it whenever a stubborn cough pops up. If you’re dealing with lingering coughs in your family, this simple remedy might just be the solution you need!
